My thoughts
The annual fee is hefty, and Amex cards are sometimes called "coupon books" for all of the MANY credits. But, those credits can be worth thousands of dollars when you actually use them. My rule of thumb is simple: if you wouldn't normally spend money on those things, the credits don't really save you anything. But if you travel frequently, dine out at Resy restaurants, and want lounge access, this card can absolutely justify its fee, at least for the first year!
How to use your points
Membership Rewards® points earned on this card are best used by transferring to travel partners. Here are some of my favorite ways to use them:
- Transfer to Flying Blue - Air France/KLM for flights to Europe — learn about Flying Blue
- Transfer to Delta SkyMiles for domestic and international flights
- Transfer to any of Amex's 21 airline and hotel partners — see all Amex partners
- Transfer to Hilton at a 1:2 ratio
This card can absolutely justify the fee — but only if you'll actually use the credits.
- The welcome offer alone is huge and worth opening just for that
- My rule: if the credits are for things you'd never normally buy, they don't save you anything
- Lounge access, many individual credits, and Global Entry make this worthwhile for frequent travelers
- If you rarely travel or won't use the lifestyle credits, this isn't the card for you
