How XP and Elite Status Actually Work
This is one of the more underrated perks of this card, so it’s worth breaking down. XP (Experience Points) is the currency Flying Blue uses for elite status, separate from the miles you spend on flights.
Just for having the card, you get a head start:
- The welcome offer gives you 100 XP after you meet the qualifying spend requirements, which is enough for automatic Silver status.
- Every account anniversary, you get 20 XP just for holding the card.
- If you spend $15,000 or more on the card in the anniversary year, you’ll earn an additional 80 XP on your account anniversary (so 100 XP total when you add this to the 20 XP for holding the card).
- Spend $25,000 in the anniversary year or more to get an additional 60 XP (160 XP total), which is just 20 XP shy of Gold.
Silver status gets you perks like priority check-in, early boarding (group 3), extra baggage allowance, bonus miles on Air France and KLM cash flights, and seat selection. Seat selection matters because of the recent changes Flying Blue made to its award pricing. The lowest tier, called “Light”, does not come with seat selection. However, as a cardholder, you can still book the cheapest award flight and choose your seat when you book. I was a little bummed about the recent changes, but this card could make up the difference!
SkyTeam elite status
The card also gives you SkyTeam Elite status, which can be accessed if you link your Flying Blue member number to your SkyTeam flight. When flying on SkyTeam member airlines, perks include:
- Priority check-in
- Extra baggage allowance
- Priority seating
- Priority boarding
- Waitlist priority
Bilt Partnership
Air France KLM cardholders can also boost their miles earnings by using their card to pay rent through Bilt. Add your card to your Bilt Wallet to earn 3x Flying Blue miles on up to $50,000 in rent payments per year, dropping to 1.5x after that.
The catch is that Bilt charges a 3% fee for paying rent with a third-party card, so this makes the most sense if you’re chasing a specific redemption and need more miles, or you’re trying to spend toward the $15,000 or $25,000 XP thresholds. It’s not something that everyone should do automatically. Do the math to decide what works best for you.

Using Your Miles
Air France KLM card miles land straight in your Flying Blue account, the shared loyalty program for Air France and KLM. There’s no transferring needed. You earn points directly into the same account you’d use if you transferred points from Chase, American Express, Capital One, or Citi.
How to book award flights on Air France or KLM
Head to the Air France or KLM website, click “Book with Miles,” and log in to your Flying Blue account. Enter your route, but leave the date blank first so you can see the full award calendar and find the cheapest days to fly.
A few tips that can make a big difference in finding the best flight options:
- Search one way at a time. You’ll see more options.
- Major U.S. airports have far more award availability than smaller ones.
- Kids ages 2 to 11 get an automatic 25% discount on award tickets when flying with an adult.
Know your fare tier
As I mentioned, Flying Blue recently reworked its award pricing into three tiers: Light, Standard, and Flex. Light is the cheapest but strips out seat selection, checked bags, and the ability to change or cancel. Standard adds those back in for a bit more, and Flex gives you full flexibility for the most miles. I broke it all down in Flying Blue Devaluation 2026: What Changed & What to Do if you want the full picture before you book. Being an Air France KLM Visa cardholder brings back some of the perks that used to be standard, so that’s nice.

Use your SkyTeam partners
Air France and KLM are part of the SkyTeam alliance, so your Flying Blue miles can also book flights on partners like Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air, and more, opening up over 1,000 destinations beyond what Air France and KLM fly directly. Search your route the same way and eligible partner flights will show up alongside Air France and KLM’s own options.
Watch for monthly Promo Rewards
Flying Blue runs discounted award fares on select routes every month, good for travel up to five months out. It’s worth checking this month’s routes before you book at standard pricing.

Card Recap: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the annual fee on the Air France KLM card? $89, with no foreign transaction fees.
What is the current welcome offer? 70,000 Bonus Miles plus 100 XP after $3,000 in purchases within the first 90 days. This is a limited-time online offer, so terms and availability can change.
Does the welcome offer give me elite status? Yes. You can earn 100 XP after meeting the spend requirement for the bonus. That is enough for Silver status in Flying Blue, which comes with useful benefits like seat selection.
How much do I need to spend to reach Gold status? If you don’t have Flying Blue status yet, you’d need 280 XP total. Between your first year welcome bonus, anniversary XP, and hitting the $25,000 spend threshold every anniversary year, you can get close without needing a second card.
Do Flying Blue miles expire? As long as your account stays active, no.
Can I use my miles on Delta or other partner airlines? You cannot transfer miles to Delta or other SkyTeam partners, but you may be able to book SkyTeam flights through Flying Blue. Check out my dedicated Flying Blue article to learn more.
Wrapping It Up
