My thoughts
This card earns cash back on its own, but like the Freedom Unlimited, the real magic happens when you pair it with a Sapphire Preferred. The points become transferable to airlines and hotels and are worth a lot more. The rotating 5% categories are where this card shines. Past categories have included Amazon, grocery stores, gas stations, and PayPal, which are things most people spend on regularly anyway. The catch is you have to remember to activate each quarter, but it's easy to do online or in the app, and there is a $1,500 spending cap per quarter in those categories. If you like being a little strategic about maximizing points, this is a great card to have in your wallet alongside the Freedom Unlimited. No annual fee means there is no reason not to keep it open forever.
How to use your points
On its own this card earns cash back, but pair it with a Sapphire Preferred and the points become transferable. Here are the best ways to use them:
- Move points to a Sapphire Preferred to unlock transfer partners — learn how to combine points
- Redeem as cash back as a statement credit
- Book through Chase Travel for flights, hotels, and rental cars
A great no-fee card that rewards you for spending in categories you already use.
- No annual fee means zero risk — a great long-term keeper
- The $200 welcome offer for just $500 in spending is one of the easiest bonuses out there
- The rotating 5% categories have included Amazon, groceries, and gas — things most people spend on anyway
- Pair it with a Sapphire Preferred to turn cash back into transferable travel points
- Remember to activate your quarterly categories or you will miss the 5% bonus!
